Play with your food! Whole wheat, cheddar shapes snack crackers

Like the Spinach Gruyere Crackers, these crackers are delicious and really simple to make. Since Rowan is a little older now, I tried to make a little game for lunch by cutting the crackers into different shapes.

I transformed my slate cheese plate into a mini chalkboard canvas and added the crackers to a simple picture. Older kids could draw the picture themselves.  I think this is a fun way to get toddlers learning their shapes while eating a pretty healthy snack.

Cheddar Shapes Whole Wheat Crackers
Print recipe here.

1 1/2 cups of grated cheddar cheese
4 tablespoons butter
3/4 cups whole wheat flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon onion powder
1/4 teaspoon tumeric

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Combine all the ingredients in a food processor and blend unit the mixture firms up into a ball, 2 minutes.

On a lightly floured surface, use a rolling pin and roll out the dough until it is about 1/8 inch thick. Using a knife cut the dough into triangles and squares. I made the circles from the top of my oversized lip balm (I washed it thoroughly), find anything you have that makes a small circle.

Place crackers on an ungreased or parchment lined cookie sheet. Bake for 12-15 minutes until a bit brown. Remove from oven and let cool.

  2. That's amazing! My daughter is a huge fan of cheese, but I've never made her cheese crackers. She's only tried the ones you get from the stores.

  4. That is such a cute idea to incorporate shape and even using the slate plate as a chalkboard. The recipe seems pretty simple too. I will have to give it a try.
